Time at university will develop your knowledge and skills and open doors to new places but it can also be a daunting prospect, especially if you are in or about to leave care. That is why Cardiff Met has put together a comprehensive package of support to make your time here as problem-free as possible.
If you are a care leaver we can offer:
Care Leavers Support Meeting
Once you have been offered a place to study at Cardiff Met (before enrolment), we will offer you a support meeting to discuss your situation and the support you think you might need. As well as you and the staff mentor, this can include your Social Worker, representatives from Cardiff Met’s accommodation department and the school you will be joining. This meeting will allow us to establish how much financial support is available, the type of accommodation you would prefer and, where appropriate, make provision for any additional support you may need.
Cardiff Met can guarantee year round accommodation (including Christmas, Easter and summer holidays) in Cardiff Met halls, but whatever you choose, we will try to ensure that the type of accommodation is appropriate to your needs.
We will do all we can to ensure that the costs associated with your studies here do not prevent you from completing your programme of study and will work with you to achieve this. A Care Leavers Bursary of £1,000 pa may be available; there are strict eligibility criteria that must be met and details of your Social Worker must be supplied. If you find that you are struggling financially, we can help you with budgeting advice and prioritise your application for Financial Contingency Funds.
If you have any issues or concerns prior to coming to Cardiff Met and/or whilst you are studying, Cardiff Met has a staff mentor who is on hand to advise on all aspects of university life. All questions and issues will be treated confidentially and only referred on with your permission.
You can inform us that you have been in care via the UCAS application form. By doing this, we can identify any support that you may need before or during your time at Cardiff Met.
*This package has been designed for care leavers and young people who estranged from parents/ guardians whose permanent residence is in the United Kingdom and who are ‘home’ students for fee purposes. The support is available to students who declare on the UCAS application that they have been in care (looked after by a local authority/ foster carers). Full details of the student’s link worker must be supplied and there are strict eligibility criteria that must be met to receive this support:
