Research is central to the vision of the Cardiff School of Sport

- it underpins our curricula
- informs practice in the wider world
- contributes to a better understanding of sport in all aspects of society.

Colleagues from the School are involved in a range of research activities from cutting edge basic science through to applied practice and policy evaluation.

Building on our success in the 2008 RAE, where based on “research power” we were ranked 6th in the UK, we have submitted to REF 2014 .

Reflecting a shared research history, and alignment with the Welsh Government agenda for collaboration within Higher Education, our REF 2014 submission was made in collaboration with Bangor University.

This exciting collaboration has resulted in the Institute for Research Excellence in Sport and Exercise (IRESE ) being established. Through IRESE our staff will continue to maximise the quality of our research whilst maintaining the critical link to practice.  Accordingly, we will continue to engage with sport related research that changes the way things are done, the way people think and the knowledge that is passed to students.
