Welsh Medium Provision 

The Cardiff School of Sport (CSS) is committed to promoting Welsh medium higher education in sport related subjects. A number of its teaching and research staff are fluent Welsh speakers and the School is playing a key role in Higher Education Funding Council for Wales’ mission to expand Welsh medium provision. The Cardiff School of Sport has an expanding portfolio of Welsh medium provision across its sport degree programmes. Currently we offer modules in socio-cultural aspects of sport, coaching science, sport and exercise physiology and research methods, as well as the final year dissertation.

From September 2012 the following modules will be available:

Our Welsh speaking staff can provide both academic and pastoral support for students studying our courses. A number of experts in the School have put together the first welsh medium textbook which supports a wide range of subject areas. There are currently two full-time members of staff who deliver modules through the medium of Welsh:

Dr Carwyn Jones is a reader in Sport Ethics and is currently the President of the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport. His primary research interests are moral development and education in sport, and his current focus is on issues surrounding alcohol and mental illness. He contributes to the delivery and supervision of socio-cultural and research methods aspects of sport.

Dr Hywel Iorwerth was recently awarded a PhD for his thesis on sport and national identity. His primary research interests are ethics and the socio-political philosophy of sport. He contributes to the delivery and supervision of socio-cultural and research methods aspects of sport

The School has also been awarded two PhD scholarships and the scholars, along with their research, help to deliver, mentor and support our Welsh medium provision. Their research interests are as follows:

Neil Hennessey - Questions of justice and fairness in sport’s officiating. He contributes to the delivery and supervision of coaching science.

Anwen Rees - Exercise and health patterns among children. She contributes to the delivery and supervision of sport and exercise physiology and research methods
