The unit acts as a centralised hub supporting the three campus based Learning Centres. The unit deals with acquisitions, cataloguing and classification, document delivery and electronic services; the team also manages the library catalogue, Locate and Cardiff Metropolitan’s institutional repository .
Acquisitions
The unit supports the ordering of all materials and receives all the monographs, ebooks and audio visual materials purchased by each Learning Centre. These materials are selected through a process of consultation between Learning Centre staff and Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Academic Schools.
Cataloguing and classification
LCSU manage Locate and the library management system (Talis), using the following international conventions and standards:
- Anglo American Cataloguing Rules (version 2)
- Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme (version 22)
- Machine Readable Catalogue records (version 21)
For further information, see the Library Division Cataloguing Policy or contact centralservices@cardiffmet.ac.uk.
Document Delivery and Inter-library loans
Books or journals unavailable at Cardiff Met can be loaned from other institutions, such as the British Library. These inter-library loans can be supplied in print or electronically to staff and students.
In turn, Cardiff Met loans its resources to other institutions as part of the scheme. If you are from an external institution and wish to borrow from Cardiff Met, please refer to our external lending policy.
Digitisation services
The unit administers the CLA (Copyright Licensing Agency) Licences. This permits the digitisation of journal articles, book chapters and images for educational use. This material is made available via Blackboard.
For more information about inter-library loans and digitisation services, contact documentdelivery@cardiffmet.ac.uk.
Electronic services
The development and management of databases and other electronic resources is coordinated by staff in LCSU. This involves the setting up of trials for new resources, assessing usage of existing resources and maintaining access via authentication methods such as Shibboleth and EZProxy. This material is purchased in collaboration with Academic Schools and is available via the Electronic Library (institutional users only)
