Shopping in the UK
Cardiff is a multi-cultural city with a diverse range of foods available to buy to suit every dietary and cultural need e.g. Halal meats, Asian foods, Chinese foods etc. Here are some addresses where you will find specific foods:
Clare Food store - Asian, 45-47 Clare Road
Shopright - Indian and Asian, 28-30 City Road
Tudor St, Riverside has a number of Asian food Stores and Chinese supermarkets
Albany Halal Food Stores - Halal meats, 57 Donald St, Roath
Zem Zem Mini Market - Middle Eastern, 12-14 Wyverne Rd, Cathays
Al Sheemal Halal Foods - Middle Eastern, 15 Salisbury Rd, Cathays
For general supermarkets and shops convenient to halls of residence there are the following supermarkets. From both campuses the supermarkets are about a 20 - 30 minute walk:
Cyncoed Campus
Sainsbury’s supermarket and Lidl Supermarket, Colchester Avenue.
Directions - Turn left out of Cyncoed campus, pass a set of traffic lights, walk down the hill, turn left at the next set of traffic lights, walk down the hill, past UWIC Colchester Avenue campus and Sainsbury’s is on your right and Lidl supermarket is further up on your left.
Sainsburys - sells food, also has a café area serving cooked meals, pharmacy, newsagent, sells limited cooking utensils, phone cards Open Hours: 7.00am - 12 Midnight Lidl - sells a smaller selection of foods than Sainsbury’s but is less expensive Open Hours: 8.00am - 8.00pm
Plasgwyn Campus
There is a Spar shop in Llandaff village which sells basic needs and there is a Tesco Extra on Western Avenue.
Directions - Turn right out of Plasgwyn, continue walking past a mini roundabout, pass the traffic lights and Llandaff Village High Street is on your left just after the pedestrian crossing. To go to Tesco’s Extra do not turn into the High Street. Walk on the left hand side of the road and follow the road round to the left. You will see a white bridge with UWIC in blue letters, cross the road by going over the bridge (Llandaff UWIC site on your left). Keep walking until you go over another bridge and Tesco’s Extra is on your right.
Tesco Extra Sells - Food, bedding, has a pharmacy, an upstairs eating area selling cooked meals, phone cards, cooking utensils, clothes and electrical items.
Open 24 hours, Monday - Saturday, Sunday until 4.00pm
Spar - Sells groceries to fill your basic needs Open hours:
Monday - Friday 7.00am - 10.30 pm, Sundays 8.00 am - 10.30 pm
