Speech & Language Therapy
The Speech and Language Therapy programme at UWIC
Our four year BSc programme, which is certified by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and accredited by the Health Professions Council , qualifies students to practise as Speech and Language Therapists (subject to successful registration with the Health Professions Council after graduation).
The SLT programme at UWIC has been established since 1972 and is the only training course in Wales for Speech and Language Therapists. In the most recent Quality Assessment the Higher Education Funding Council (Wales) the course was rated as “Excellent” (the highest possible rating). SLT is part of the Cardiff School of Health Sciences
The Team
SLT has a team of dedicated tutors, several of whom undertake clinical work in a range of specialisms as well as engaging in other activities such as external examining, consultancy and research. We are also fortunate to have clinical specialists and other health professionals as visiting lecturers.
Students and staff have strong links with the Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) profession and we work closely with practising clinicians who take on the role of clinical educators for the programme. Our students undertake a wide range of placements during the course, beginning with observational work and moving on to clinical practice under supervision; all students will work with both children and adults in a variety of settings. Students’ learning on clinical placement is supported by ongoing individual and small-group tutorials with UWIC staff. We pride ourselves on the level of preparation our students receive for clinical practice and the employability of our graduates.
Dedicated Support
As well as academic tutorials and lectures, each student receives individual support from a personal tutor from the programme team throughout their time with us. Additionally, the UWIC Student Services unit offers counselling, careers advice and help with financial planning, as well as providing excellent support for disabled students and students with medical conditions.
