Research Interests
Molecular studies of bacterial pathogenicity, virulence and host-pathogen interactions. Initial work investigated the ferrous iron acquisition system in E. coli as part of an iron-mediated virulence regulon. This led to an interest in transcriptional regulation of virulence factors, and the characterisation of LysR-type transcriptional regulators in the zoonotic pathogen Franscisella tularensis, with the view to generating a live attenuated vaccine strain. The contribution of host-pathogen interaction to virulence of human pathogens focussed on characterising the surface protein AgI/II of Streptococcus pyogenes and its association with human innate immunity glycoprotein gp340, and factors affecting its expression.
