d) Several months’ volunteer work overseas as Resident Biologist in the Tambopata/Candamo Nature Reserve, Peru, where I participated in a variety of biological studies that were being undertaken within the reserve, and also led nature hikes, wrote educational literature and gave informal seminars while acting as specialist naturalist guide to ecotourists (May - September 1995).

Research Interests
I have extensive experience in the investigation of cellular transport and signalling processes (particularly those involving Ca2+), as applied to the pathophysiology of several diseases. 
My PhD involved functional characterisation of the ATP-binding proteins CFTR and SERCA2b. As a post-doctoral research scientist, I investigated the skeletal muscle Ca2+ pump enzyme SERCA1, whose dysfunction is linked to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (Southampton University, 1996-1999); the functional characterisation of malarial transport proteins via heterologous expression in vertebrate cells (St George’s Hospital Medical School, London, 1999-2001); and several different signalling/transport proteins in cardiovascular disease (Bath University, 2001-2003).

Since my arrival in UWIC in 2003, I have integrated the expertise gained earlier in my career into the ‘Diabetes and Metabolic Health’ group’s research into the inflammatory and signalling aspects of diabetes and its complications, especially the effect of exercise, dietary regimes and therapeutic interventions in triggering signaling events relevant to diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.
