Academic Interests
     
Studied Pharmacology and Biochemical Toxicology during his first degree. A project studying the metabolism of the hypnotic drug methaqualone by hepatic aldehyde oxidase stimulated his interest in drug metabolism.

He gained his PhD studying the enzymology mediating the biological N-oxidation of medicinal and some novel inhibitors of dihydrofolate reductase at the Department of Pharmacy, Kings College, University of London. Following his PhD studies, he spent three years as a post-doctoral researcher studying endocoid markers of anxiety in humans at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, University of London.

Dr Watkins was appointed to his current position in 1989, and is currently the Programme Director of a new and exciting innovative programme, BSc (Hons) Sports Biomedicine and Nutrition. This important programme within the Cardiff School of Health Sciences focuses on strategies aimed at improving physical fitness and the contributions which exercise and diet make to the future health and well-being of society.

Dr Watkins’s current research is conducted mainly within the newly built Health Assessment Suite. His interests involve the effect of mild exercise on inflammatory markers in sedentary individuals.

Teaching

Dr Watkins is Discipline Leader for Human Physiology within the Cardiff School of Health Sciences, and contributes to taught programmes of study ranging from Higher National Diploma to Masters level.

Dr Watkins is Programme Director for the BSc (Hons) Sports Biomedicine and Nutrition.

University Responsibilities

Dr Watkins is a member of a number of University  Committees, including the Validation and Review Panel, Academic Standards and Quality Board, Collaborative Provision Committee, and the Cardiff School of Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee.  

External Responsibilities

Dr Watkins is a Chartered Biologist (CBiol MSB), a Chartered Chemist (CChem MRSC), is a member of the Institute of Biomedical Science (MIBMS) and is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He aslo has External Examiner appointments at St George's University of London and Hong Kong University.
