After studying Chemistry/Biology at UWIST in Cardiff, I moved to the NHS at worked as a State Registered Biomedical Scientists for nearly 19 years. My main role was in diagnostic and clinical haematology. It was during this time that I acquired my B.A. in Statistics/Mathematics and M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry. I left the NHS when I was told that since they were paying me so much money, I had to have a greater managerial, rather than a scientific role. I moved to UWIC in 1995, and acquired a PhD supervised by Professor Ken Jones in the regulation of inflammation by saturated lipids. I remain very interested in the inflammatory response and its regulation by both lipids and exercise mediated through an important group of nuclear receptors the PPARs. I attempt to apply my research to a number of diseases, but I am particularly interested in type 2 Diabetes (T2D), which is a major public health problem due to its inflammatory nature. This inflammation is a major cause of cardiovascular and inflammatory disease. I have published a number of papers in this area and supervise a number of PhDs in the regulation of inflammation and lipid homeostasis in T2D. I have also discovered that being a statistician is a surprisingly easy way to make new friends and collaborators. Consequently I have also published in statistical methods as applied to Clinical Studies and have consulted and designed several clinical trials. I have been a consultant to The World Health Organization on three separate occasions in Nepal and Sri Lanka, where I have advised these governments and the WHO on advanced laboratory methods of analysis for a number of diseases.
