Dave is a graduate of London University and his first degree is in law which is his specialist subject. Dave is a qualified social worker who has worked in Youth Justice and Child Protection in London, the South Wales Valleys and Cardiff. He has been a training officer for a large local authority coordinating child protection training.
His academic teaching at UWIC spans health and social care, interprofessional studies, regulation and inspection, housing and social work. Apart from law his teaching areas are social policy, assistive technology and research methods. His research interests are looked after children and foster care. He undertook research into children’s homes in Wales for his MSc dissertation and is currently completing research into foster carers and children going on to higher education, together with two colleagues.
Dave strongly believes in integrating practice with learning and uses case studies and practice experience to inform his teaching and learning; he also puts a strong emphasis on the use of research and evidence in developing good practice and the development of confidence and presentation skills: students in his seminar and tutorial groups are expected to read widely before discussing their ideas with their colleagues. Above all, Dave thinks that learning should be fun and work related.
