MA Education: Managing Community Practice & Post Graduate Diploma in Youth & Community Work

What is it?

The Post Graduate Diploma is a two year part-time programme which carries professional endorsement as a JNC qualifying award in youth and community work.
The MA is a three year part-time programme designed for experienced practitioners in the broad area of community-based practice in the statutory and voluntary organisations.

Who is this programme aimed at?

The Post Graduate Diploma caters primarily for graduates who are engaged as practitioners but who have no professional qualification in youth and community work. The MA is designed for experienced practitioners wishing to develop their professional and academic skills and understanding.

What will I get out of the programme?

The Post Graduate Diploma consists of two taught modules that are undertaken at university. Students can expect to explore the principles and practice of youth and community work and consider how such services should be managed.  You will also undertake two work-based modules that will require you to complete two placements within the field of youth and community work.

Placements take place in a range of settings including:

• Youth centres and projects

• Community work projects

• Alternative education settings

• Detached youth work settings

• Housing and homelessness projects

• Drug agencies

• Duke of Edinburgh Award projects

The MA involves taking three compulsory modules:  Leading and Managing Community Practice, Researching Practice and Reflective Practice and then selecting an additional module from a range of related topics. After this you will be able to undertake your dissertation.

How does the assessment work?

The programme utilises a range of assessment tools including written assignments and presentations. We ask all students to write regularly and engage in critical reflection about their practice. Many of the assignments are based directly upon your practice at the work placements. There are no examinations.

How long does it usually take?

Part-time Post Graduate Diploma: normally two years but can be extended to three years. The full time option will take one year.

MA takes two academic years part-time study plus dissertation, although alternative modes of attendance may be negotiated.

Where will I study?

The programme runs at Cardiff Met’s Cyncoed Campus.
