English and Contemporary Media

With the largest media sector in the UK outside of London, the degree is perfectly placed in Cardiff to offer both a rewarding and stimulating media experience. This innovative degree programme allows students to combine theoretical perspectives in English with theoretical analysis of contemporary media, such as film, television, music and digital technology with practical skills in writing and producing journalism. Taught by academic staff who are also current practitioners and researchers, the degree offers a rich and varied academic focus, and benefits from an exciting extra-curricula culture, including visiting media professionals and cultural excursions. Students also have the opportunity to contribute to and co-edit Cardiff's Calling, the University’s student guide and Nexus, the University's creative writing magazine.

English and Creative Writing

Cardiff is a phenomenal city to study Creative Writing. The city is culturally vibrant and brings you into contact with a range of contemporary thinkers, artists and writers. The Creative Writing element of your degree will develop your thinking through textual and practical exploration, and equip you with a wide variety of writing skills and methodologies in relation to different genre (including fiction, poetry and scriptwriting). You will be encouraged to consider textual influence and experiment with different styles. At the core of the degree is your development as a practitioner. You’ll cultivate your individual voice and writing style through revision and editing, and share your writing and thinking with your fellow students in a supportive and evaluative environment. Modules reflect our practitioners’ interests and publications and so include writing for stage and radio(Scriptwriting), fiction and the novel (Writing Fiction) and Journalism.

English and Drama

Cardiff is a city that is alive with artistic creativity in all areas of the arts but nowhere more so than in the staging of new and traditional theatre. The recent introduction of a world class venue, the Wales Millennium Centre, has really put Cardiff on the map. The Drama side of the degree introduces you to a range of theatre genres, playwrights and practitioners using both textual and practical exploration. You will be encouraged by our experienced team of practitioners to consider the influences from which theatre is made, experiment with performance styles and analyse theatre practice. In addition you will be supported in your development of your own skills as a performer.
