Thanks to your donations, the Research Fund has made another two awards this year. The Medical Applications Group (MAG) in our Product Design Research Centre has benefited from an award to purchase a new state of the art 3D printer. The MAG have pioneered the ability to produce improved breast and facial prostheses for trauma patients employing computer-aided technologies to streamline production. The Biomechanics team used their award to purchase of a portable three-dimensional motion tracking system. The system will allow the Research Group to undertake detailed biomechanical analysis of human motion in real world setting previously limited to the lab. You can read more in Issue 4 of Horizons...

The Development Fund is the new name for what was previously called the Annual Fund. We felt that this change of name better reflected the Fund's aims and priorities. The Development Fund will make a difference to current and future students through providing new scholarships and bursaries, funding world-leading research and supporting new resources and equipment. We were so delighted with the success of the alumni telephone campaign in 2010 that we have decided to do it all over again.
During the last campaign, student callers spoke to nearly 1,000 alumni over the course of 4 weeks. It was such a great opportunity for them to speak to graduates who had studied the same course and many received great career advice and tips on how to make the most of the Cardiff Met experience. Our alumni also pledged over £30,000 to support the Cardiff Met Annual Fund, which will help support current and future students in their studies. We would like to say a big thank you to all alumni who participated last year, it was fantastic to get your feedback and hear about what you are doing now.
This year, we intend to run the campaign during October and November and we will write to all alumni that we intend to call. Unfortunately, we lack telephone numbers for many of you so please contact us if you would like to take part!

Congratulations to everyone who ran the Cardiff Half Marathon in October 2010. All of us at the The Development Office would like to thank staff Aimee Jones and Ashley Morgan in particular. The total raised this year is over £650! Every penny raised will go directly to Libraries, the Wales Sports Centre for the Disabled at Cyncoed Campus and supporting students in need.
Commenting on the race, Ashley said: "I don't usually do sponsored things but thought this was a good opportunity to raise some money for some of the less fortunate students that we all encounter. I ran it in 1 hour, 59 minutes which I was pleased with. I've managed to raise over £250!"
