Tony Chapman is a former pupil of Milford Haven Grammar School and Bexley Grammar School and returned to Wales in 1998 for his current position, Cardiff Metropolitan University Vice-Chancellor. He was previously a senior lecturer at UWIST (now Cardiff University) before joining Leeds University in 1983 as Professor of Psychology and Head of Department. Later in Leeds he became Dean of Science and Pro-Vice-Chancellor and was a Visiting Professor from 1998 to 2003. From 2004 to 2007 he was the Senior Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Wales. As an undergraduate he studied Mathematics and Psychology at the University of Leicester.
With others he has published 15 books, 3 book series and about 125 scientific papers; and he has presented some 250 research papers in over 25 countries overseas. His research has been funded by the ESRC/SSRC, EPSRC, MRC and the EU/CEC, as well as by various government departments/agencies and other sources. For 6 years he was the editor of the British Journal of Psychology, and for many years he was the editor-in-chief/editor of Current Psychology. He served on Research Assessment (RAE) Panels for university funding councils in 1992 and 1996 and was Vice-Chairman of the ESRC Training Board. He was a founding director of Sound Alert Ltd (later Sound Alert Technology Plc), a business in directional sound alarms, which won The 1997 Prince of Wales Award for Innovation (for economic potential).
He was elected Fellow of the British Psychological Society in 1978 and Honorary Fellow in 1999 – one of about a dozen UK psychologists - in a Society of some 45,000 members, elected for his “research and leadership”. He is an Academician in the UK Academy of Learned Societies for the Social Sciences (AcSS) – one of 60 founding Academicians – elected for his “exceptional, distinguished and substantial contributions to the Social Sciences”.
He has been President of the Psychology Section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, President of the British Psychological Society, President of the Association of Learned Societies for the Social Sciences, Chair of the UK Deans of Science Committee, Chair of Higher Education Wales, and a Vice-President of Universities UK (UUK).
He is a member of the Council of the Parliamentary University Group, the Council for Industry in Higher Education (CIHE), the Board of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), the Board of the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) and its Resources Committee, the Council of CBI-Wales, the Advisory Committee of the London School of Commerce, and the Advisory Group for the South Australia Management Institute. He is a Member of the Board of the Higher Education Academy and chaired its Academic Council. He chairs Singapore’s Academic Accreditation Committee for its Association of Private Schools and Colleges. Until 2006 he was a Board Member of the Universities and Colleges Employers’ Association (UCEA); and for the QAA he has chaired its Access Recognition and Licensing Committee and the Advisory Committee for Wales. He was a founding Board Member of the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education (2003-07). Within Universities UK he is a member of the International and EU Policy Committee, and he has been a member of the UUK Board and its Longer Term Strategy Group, Finance and Resources Strategy Group, and Business and Industry Sector Strategy Group. He is a Vice-President of Cardiff Business Club.
Tony Chapman is married to Dr Siriol David, a Forensic Psychologist, and they have two sons and two daughters.
