Profile

I am Associate Dean: Enterprise and a Principal Lecturer in Primary Education with a subject specialism of Literacy across the School of Education at Cardiff Metropolitan University.  I joined Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2008 and have taught across the School of Education on a variety of programmes linked to literacy and primary education to primary trainee teachers and undergraduate education and English degree students.  Prior to this appointment, I was a primary school teacher for 20 years and a Literacy Coordinator for 15 of them. I am currently the Welsh regional representative for the United Kingdom Literacy Association (UKLA) and the editor for the English Association’s Literacy journal for primary teachers, English 4-11. I have a lifelong interest in children’s literature and developing children’s reading for pleasure and currently co-leads a children’s literature Special Interest Group with two UKLA literacy colleagues.  I have recently completed a research project supporting student teachers subject knowledge of children’s literature and am involved in a research project looking at the current provision for supporting trainee teachers’ subject knowledge of children’s literature on Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programmes across the UK. My other main areas of interest are using philosophical enquiry to develop thinking skills and talk in the primary classroom.
