Prior to taking on the role of Cluster Leader for BA Modern History and Politics and BA Modern History and English, Colin Sowden worked as Course Director of the UWIC International Foundation Course, a year-long programme which helps prepare overseas students for undergraduate programmes at UWIC and other universities. In this context he delivered the core modules (English, Study Skills and IT) and the following subject modules: Contemporary History; Business Law; Organizational Behaviour.

Before coming to UWIC he worked for over seven years in Milan as an English language tutor, translator and writer. Subsequently he was Director of Studies at Trebinshun House near Brecon, a residential centre where European managers develop their business communication skills in English. He then spent two years as a lecturer in English at the University of the United Arab Emirates in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi.
