Physical Education and Sport - MSc/PgD
Course Overview
The part-time MSc PES programme offers a unique opportunity for physical education teachers or equivalent professionals to further develop their knowledge and understanding of issues to do with the leadership and management of physical education in secondary schools. The programme provides students with the opportunity to develop their competencies and knowledge of issues in physical education and sport and develop their leadership and management skills to allow them to progress within teaching to middle and senior management positions. The applied nature of the programme encourages students to utilize real experiences to help inform their own and other students’ learning. An ability to reflect on and initiate change within the students’ own school is a core feature of the programme.
Course Content
Compulsory Modules:
• Principles of Leadership and Management in Physical Education and Sport
• Teaching and Coaching: Applying Theory to Practice
• Research Skills in Physical Education and Sport
• Final Project
One option module chosen from:
• Independent Study
• Physical Activity in Health and Disease
• Paediatric Exercise Science and Health
On completion of year one students may exit with a PgDip or continue their studies to undertake the Final Project that leads to the award MSc Physical Education and Sport.
Career Potential
The course is of particular relevance to PE teachers with 2 to 3 years experience and especially those who wishing to move into leadership and management roles such as Head of Department or Subject Leader. The programme offers opportunities for professional and career development and focuses on applied and experiential learning.
Entry Requirements
- PGCE PE (Secondary) with 60 credits at Masters level
- Employed as physical education teacher or equivalent
