This is an applied sport science programme that focuses on the understanding, improvement and analysis of performance in sport. The curriculum progressively develops your knowledge of tactical analysis, measuring technical effectiveness, and specific technique analysis within actual sporting performance using a range of modern techniques and technology. In addition, students will be introduced to behavioural analysis of coach and athletes, and state of the art athlete monitoring and time-motion analysis techniques via GPS (Global Positioning Systems).
The core modules in performance analysis are complemented and supplemented by modules drawn from physiology, biomechanics and measurement issues in sport and exercise science. These elements give the course a unique flavour that allow you to understand the theoretical principles and applied process skills that underpin performance analysis.
You will be given many opportunities to develop your practical and contextual knowledge in training, coaching and performance that will allow you to evaluate and modify your own professional practice as an analyst and that of performers and coaches in a range of sports. It will also enable you to develop the specific, vocational skill set necessary to embark on a career in performance analysis.

Learning & Teaching
Learning, teaching and assessment methods have been selected to ensure the educational aims and the learning outcomes of modules and the programme are achieved.
The learning and teaching methods may include lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials and staff and students are expected to support these sessions via VLE. Lead lectures introduce key topics and concepts, which are developed through a range other learning and teaching methods such as seminar, tutorials, workshops to enhance the student experience and engagement. Students are also able to meet tutors or any other members of staff on a one to one basis. As a school, we are keen to implement the principal aim of Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Learning, Teaching and Assessment strategy: To provide student-cantered learning opportunities that deliver a quality and flexible learning environment. Improving personalised support and access to academic staff.
These selected methods emphasise and facilitate students’ critical development, and cohere around the integration of practice and theory. Through the programme, students will normally experience both tutor-led learning (usually at Level 4) and self-directed methods of learning, increasing independence and reflection encouraging positive attitudes towards lifelong learning (at Levels 5 and 6).
Through the teaching and learning methods and the embedding of ‘EDGE’ (enabling the development of graduate employability) students will be equipped with, develop and be able to demonstrate graduate attributes as defined by Cardiff Metropolitan University and Cardiff School of Sport. We aim to help them to develop into reflective professionals and critical scholars. The teaching and learning has been designed so that from induction to graduation, students will encounter a learning experience that is coherent and develops their identity within their programme of study. A principal concept of this programme is to enable students to apply theory to practice.
The assessment strategies for each module vary to ensure that most appropriate method is used for that area of study. Modes of assessment are designed to reflect that students have fulfilled the learning outcomes of the programme of study, or part of a programme, and have achieved the standard required to progress to the next stage or to qualify for an award (as articulated by the FHEQ and CQFW). Assessments support the student learning experience and provide opportunities for students to engage in formative and summative assessments to test knowledge, ability, skill, and critical understanding. The undergraduate modules are assessed primarily by a combination of varying types of assessments (e.g., written coursework, poster presentations, oral presentations, portfolios, seen and unseen exams, practical skills assessments) that are designed to assess, develop, and enhance academic and employability skills. Students who wish to obtain an honours degree award will be expected to produce a dissertation of between 8,000 to 12,000 words in the final year.
Employability & Careers
Graduates from the Cardiff School of Sport follow careers in elite sport performance analysis, sports science support, sports development and non-sporting applications of performance analysis. Past graduates who specialised in performance analysis at undergraduate and postgraduate level have become very influential in high performance sport, working for a wide range on international governing bodies and professional clubs. Examples include the RFU, WRU, the EWCB, the EIS, Aviva Premier rugby, premiership football clubs and Team GB at the London Olympic Games. The subjects studied and skills learnt will also give graduates the opportunity to continue their education to Master’s degree and Doctorate level.
Applicants should have a strong sporting profile, five GCSE passes including English Language and Maths at grade C or above plus:
- 300 points from at least 3 A Levels / Scottish Advanced Highers to include grades BB within a relevant subject, General Studies excluded
- QCF BTEC Extended Diploma: Distinction Distinction Merit to include 12 Distinctions overall within a relevant subject
- 300 points from the Irish Leaving Certificate at Highers to include 3 x B1 grades within a relevant subject (minimum grade C2 considered)
- Pass Access with 45 credits at Level 3 with 15 credits at Distinction within a relevant subject
- 300 points from the Welsh Baccalaureate to include grades BB at A Level within a relevant subject, General Studies excluded, Core counted as fourth subject
- Qualifications equivalent to the above

Also available part-time and can be up to eight years. The part-time students join the full-time students for all modules. Therefore most of the modules are completed between 9.00am and 6.00pm on weekdays.
