Course Content
This course provides the theoretical foundation to consolidate practical experience. The core material covers the fundamental area of modern biology and illustrates a range of laboratory techniques. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on the development of communication and interpersonal skills. Modules studied include:
- Key Skills for Biomedical Scientists
- Human Anatomy & Physiology
- Cell Biology & Genetics
- Biochemistry
- Microbiology and Immunology
- Professional Studies in Biomedical Sciences
Career Potential
The course is designed for those wishing to pursue a career in Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, and related areas in medicine, industry, or research. This qualification may be used to support applications for promotion in your current employment, or as a route to further courses of study.
Successful completion of this programme will allow entry to year two of many of our BSc programmes, or into the School’s accredited part-time degrees in Biomedical Sciences.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have one of the following:
- EDEXCEL National Certificate or Diploma in Science
- At least one GCE A level pass (in Biology or Chemistry) plus supporting passes in GCSE at Grades A, B or C
- An equivalent qualification
- Advanced GNVQ in Science (Pass)
Mature students without these formal qualifications but who have
relevant experience may be considered in certain circumstances.

Course Length:
Two years part-time.
Students attend UWIC for one day and evening for thirty weeks during each academic year.
Assessment:
Students are continuously assessed throughout the course, and also sit formal examinations.
