UWIC’s BUSA Basketball victory
THE University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) is celebrating after becoming BUSA Women’s Basketball champions against all odds.
After a hard fought and injury plagued battle the UWIC Archers claimed their victory at a three day tournament in Sheffield recently. The competition was somewhat a baptism of fire for the recently promoted National Division One team who have welcomed several new players recently.
With a new name, new sponsorship deals and new international players the UWIC Archers came out fighting to win 80 points to 79 against Northumbria University.
In the initial stages of the game it had been Northumbria who were leading, especially after one player had to leave the court after an eye injury and another player injured her ankle. However, in the dying minutes of the game the Archers took every chance that they could to secure a win just as the final whistle blew.
Damian Jennings, Head Coach of the team and Lecturer at UWIC, said: “Sheffield was hosting 20 sports that weekend and at times it felt that every competitor from those sports wanted to take a glimpse of the spectacle unfolding in front of them. I recall turning around in frustration after an officials call to view a sea of crazed sports fans perhaps 400-500 deep! Their noise and impact really seemed to favour UWIC and the display of incredible tenacity against adversity the ladies were producing.
“This game is likely to go down in BUSA history alongside being an incredible advert for women’s sport and specifically women’s basketball.”
