Enjoy a glimpse of India at new exhibition

ELEMENTS of picture perfect India is currently on display at a touring exhibition hosted by the Director of the Howard Gardens Gallery from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC).

Subterranean Architecture: Stepwells in Western India, is an exhibition of digital photographs and drawings by Richard Cox at Llantarnam Grange Arts Center in Cwmbran, which continues until the beginning of November.

The exhibition documents Stepwells, Baoris and Kunds in New Delhi, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Richard said: “I have had strong associations with Rajasthan since first visiting India in 1993 to set up the Wales Rajasthan Visual Artists Exchange.
The impact of the rich visual culture of India and in particular some aspects of traditional architecture, Stepwells and the four existing observatories created by Jai Singh II, have influenced the developments of my work.”

He has made repeated return working visits collaborating and exhibiting work in India between 1993-2008. During the spring of 2007 and 2008 he was engaged in two research tours visiting New Delhi, Gujarat and Rajasthan to photo document 150 Stepwell sites and three of the Jantar Mantar observatory locations, recording images that form the content of this exhibition.

This exhibition has been made possible with the support of The Arts Council of Wales, Wales Arts International and Cardiff School of Art and Design at UWIC.
