UWIC sport facility punches above its weight 

BUDDING Joe Calzaghes recently descended on the National Indoor Athletics Centre (NIAC) for the first ever Great Britain Junior Boxing Championships.

Hundreds of youngsters from Wales, England and Scotland attended the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association’s inaugural event based at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff’s (UWIC) Cyncoed campus.

The two-day boxing extravaganza showcased some of the country’s finest young talent and with strong support from families and friends, Wales managed to amass an impressive eight gold medals.

NIAC is the only purpose built, year-round facility of its kind in the UK and as well as being one of the major centres for sports science research within the UK, it has played host to an ever increasing number of impressive sporting events including the 3 AAA’s Athletics Champs, Welsh Athletics Champs, International Netball events and it has now become a well renowned centre for hosting martial arts events.

Owen Rodgers, UWIC’s Sports Facilities Manager said: “This is the second time we have hosted a boxing tournament and on both occasions the event has been a success. It also highlights the versatility of NIAC.”
