Exhibition marks silver celebrations of UWIC ceramics

AN exhibition of work by talented local and international artists at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC), is running all of this week.

Jane Hutt AM, Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills, attended the launch of the MA Ceramics/MA Fine Art Degree Show Exhibition which runs daily until next Friday 19 September at UWIC’s Howard Gardens Gallery.

It is a particularly special celebration as MA Ceramics, part of UWIC’s Cardiff School of Art & Design, is marking its 25th year. As well as attracting talented local and regional artists, the International students in this year’s cohort originate from as far afield as Mexico, Korea, Japan, Jordan, USA, Éire and Cyprus.

Peter Castle, MA Ceramics Programme Director said: “A wide variety of artistic solutions are demonstrated by the work of the 2008 cohort of MA Ceramics students at Cardiff. All of them have responded with imagination and commitment to the considerable demands of the programme. They share an allegiance to the medium of ceramics, but each has developed an individual way of working, creating innovative outcomes which reflect a remarkably diverse range of interests. Their creativity is a testament to the possibilities of ceramics as a discipline as well as a material and to the MA Ceramics programme in its 25th year.”

Just one of the exciting exhibitions that will be on display is the work of Susan Stockbridge who produced a 1920s-style group of slip cast tea sets which reflect the history of her family from Blaenau Gwent as recollected by her father.

They have been on display at one of the period cottages at St Fagans National History Museum and looked very much at home in such an authentic setting.

Jane Hutt said: Jane Hutt said: “It was wonderful to see the wealth of talent Wales has to offer being showcased. The students and their tutors can be extremely proud of their hard work, dedication and achievement as can UWIC for yet again remaining at the top of its class in nurturing creative talent amongst our young people.”
