CARDIFF & UWIC Hockey Club have rounded off a stellar season with their latest league-winning victory, having already clinched promotion to the England Hockey League the previous weekend.

Cardiff & UWIC's 2010/11 squadCardiff & UWIC enjoyed an impressive 5-1 victory over Devizes which crowned them champions of the Davis Wood Premier Division and put the icing on the cake of an impressive season.

The club will now play in the English Hockey League Conference West, which feeds into the top division in the UK. Manager Andy Gowman said: “We have been very, very consistent. We have gone on a run and it is a good achievement. We have been playing really good hockey, our discipline has been remarkably better. It was a learning curve for us. The support from Toby Nichols at UWIC has been really useful.”

Cardiff & UWIC have lost only two games all season, and their bulletproof form has made them untouchable at the top of the table. Head coach Walid Abdo said: “It has obviously been a great team effort. It has been a great season, and it has been down to the boys, they worked really hard. The guys have really enjoyed themselves.”

The quality of teams competing in the Conference West will put Cardiff & UWIC to the test, but Abdo believes his players are up to the task. “It is going to be a step-up,” he said. “But I am 100 percent confident the boys can cope with it. It is going to be great for the club and great for the area.”

Since Gowman and Abdo took the reins at the start of last season, the club has made significant progress. And Gowman believes his five-year plan for Cardiff & UWIC has fallen into place so far.

“Next year is consolidation and planning; year four, we will try and get into the Premier League. The fifth year will be consolidation in the Premier and then a push for the European Hockey League. If we are anywhere near that after five years we will be over the moon.”
