Cardiff Metropolitan University pays tribute to two former students and one current student whose successes have been recognised in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.

Gold-medal winners Helen Glover and Aled Sion Davies as well as British Lions and Wales rugby player JJ Williams have received MBEs.

Helen won gold at the London 2012 Olympics in the women’s rowing pairs. Aled, who is currently studying at Cardiff Met, won gold in the Paralymics, winning the F42 discus event.

JJ Williams has been recognised for his achievements in rugby, having won 37 caps for the Lions and Wales, and for his charity work.

David Cobner, Dean of Cardiff School of Sport, at Cardiff Metropolitan University, paid tribute to the three.

“On behalf of everyone at this university, I would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Helen, Aled and JJ. They have achieved incredible deeds in front of global audiences, and these honours are fully deserved.

“Hopefully, they also send a message to all those striving for a successful career in sport at our university – if you work hard enough success will come!”
