UWIC Archers End 2008 on a High with Undefeated Reign
The undefeated women’s basketball team of the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) has proved that they’re inches away from being hailed as the most successful women’s basketball club in British history.
The UWIC Archers fought and won a great victory against their closest rival, Team Northumbria, with a final score of 108 -10 on Saturday 13th December. Success was had on home turf at the Archers Arena, UWIC Cyncoed Sports Hall, prompting Team Northumbria to return home minus the trophy.
The Archers had previously managed to fight off the reigning EBL Division One Champions, to claim top spot and maintain their undefeated record.
Saturday’s game had all ready sparked some anticipation due to the slight grudge between the two teams, after UWIC Archers defeated Team Northumbria in last year’s BUSA Championships, denying the opposing team the title for the fourth consecutive year.
The undefeated team also walked away with yet another win the next day versus the London Acers, which qualified them for the finals in the National Cup early next year.
Damien Jennings, Head Coach of the Archers and senior sports lecturer at UWIC said: “It was fantastic to walk away with our 8th straight win in only our second season in the premier British league.”
He continued, “The whole team contributed significantly at both ends of the floor with our full court press making life very tough for Team Northumbria and our quick breaks and patient half-court offence ensuring good shooting options.”
“I imagine Team Northumbria will work hard for revenge in BUC’s and in the National league when we visit them in 2009, so this season is by no means over but it has been an excellent start for us, and I am very proud of how hard the girls are working day-in, day-out.”
