TWO students from Estonia who are studying at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) did not expect to meet many of their fellow countrymen during their stay.

So the ERASMUS students, Yuri Verbitski and Pille Davel, were surprised and honoured when they ended up meeting the Estonian president.

The two who have come from the Tallia University in Tallinn, Estonia, were thrilled to meet President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and the First Lady Evelin Ilves while they were guests of Atlantic College in St Donats.

The college were holding an official visit by the President as part of the WALESTONIA Festival organised by the Estonian Embassy. The two students from Estonia were also joined by UWIC Humanities student, James Piller, who studied at the University of Tartu as part of his ERASMUS placement earlier this year.

Yuri Verbitski said: “This was a real surprise for me and such an honour. I have only ever seen the President on TV when I was in Estonia; therefore it was such a pleasure to meet him and his wife here in Wales. We also gave the President a present of a UWIC Cardiff School of Education umbrella which due to the Welsh weather, he used immediately.”
