From 2002-2006 prior to arriving in Cardiff, she spent 4 years living, working and researching tourism for her PhD in The Gambia, entitled: “A Political Economy of Small Scale Business Development in Gambian Tourism, West Africa”.

This involved extensive Participant Action Research with a tourism trade association, consultancy work for the Gambia Tourism Authority and two years as a Head of Department and Lecturer for tourism in a business college where she helped to establish the first HND course in The Gambia to cover middle and senior management education in tourism.

During this period she gained extensive experience and knowledge of the vital link between tourism and development, international tourism operations and entrepreneurship.  She has also lectured on the Masters in Tourism and Sustainability at the University of West of England, Bristol. Her previous management career in social housing has provided a strong interest in public and private sector collaboration, community involvement and social justice.

Sheena appreciates the uniqueness and diversity of tourism as a multidisciplinary academic subject and as a highly competitive, dynamic and challenging industry to work in. She currently teaches Business and Tourism Ethics, Tourism in Developing Countries, Corporate Social Responsibility, Strategic Management, Marketing, Sustainable Tourism and Tourism Impact analysis.
