I am a historian by research training, having studied history and economic and social history at Exeter University in the mid and late 1980s where I was awarded my PhD for my work on twentieth-century seaside resort development in the Southwest of England. Following this I worked in policy and research at the Sports Council for Wales and held several senior posts in tourism development, marketing and public relations in Welsh local government.

I joined UWIC in 1994 where I have held a number of senior academic posts, including Director of Graduate Studies and served on the former Welsh School of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management's Management and Planning Team.

A strong proponent of advocacy scholarship, I am one of originators of the notion of hopeful tourism scholarship and write on tourism, social justice and citizenship as well as destination brands and place reputations. I am an editorial board member of several leading international journals including Place Branding & Public Diplomacy, Hospitality & Society and Vacation Marketing and an Associate Editor of the Annals of Tourism Research.
