Matt specialises in HRM, Strategic HRM and Employee Relations and teaches on a range of full and part-time undergraduate courses within the school. The main purpose of these modules is to consider the management of people within organisations, and the aim is to encourage students to develop a critical awareness of the issues and possible tensions and conflicts associated with managing the employment relationship.

Matt has recently completed his PhD (April 2010) investigating the development of HRM within universities and, in particular, the extent to which the increasing focus on HRM led initiatives is leading to an individualisation of the employee contract within the higher education sector.  Matt has presented the results of his fieldwork at a number of international conferences, including the Critical Management Studies Conference in Manchester, the Labour Process Conference in Dublin and the Society for Research into Higher Education Conference in Newport.  Two of those papers have subsequently been published (see research and publications link above) with further papers to follow.

Matt is a member of the British Universities Industrial Relations Association (BUIRA) and the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE).  He is also a member of HERCULES (Higher Education Research Centre: Universities, Learning, Economy and Society) a research centre based in the school of Management. He is also actively involved with the local UCU branch.

Out of work Matt used to actively pursue a number of interests including playing golf, watching rugby and cricket, and attending various jazz, folk and opera events - but then he had children, who now occasionally allow him to go to the gym.
