CARIAD research projects aim to champion and include vulnerable people in order to address some of the most significant challenges that face society today. While CARIAD’s projects are diverse they all share a common concern with innovating new technology systems that synthesise theory and applied research across the disciplines of the arts, science and technology.

The scope of issues addressed by the group ranges from the ‘locked in’ autistic child who encounters difficulties with play and communication, immigrant groups who are displaced and disconnected within communities, medical application design, wellbeing, and the difficulties of dementia in an ageing population. Each project has a distinctly playful application, and takes a critical design approach to discovering possibilities rather that solving problems.
