Paul Johnson and Mike Whitson

Paul Johnson and Mike Whitson with Neil Jenkins How did you two set up in business together?
Well, I suppose it all started on the rugby pitch at Cyncoed. I played Hooker and Mike was a shy & retiring Second Row and essentially we got along right away. He’s always been a top fella, a real bon viveur & raconteur and even back in College we would talk about setting our own business up.
So then after college, Mike went off to work in the Exhibition Events Contracting Field and I started my Sales Career selling photocopiers for Gestetner in Cardiff and it took us some time, really, before we decided in 1992 to actually make a go of the business.

What do PSM provide?
We started off, with a third partner Scott Tovey (he’s the S, to mine and Mike’s P & M) providing customised garments for Clubs, Societies and Organisations throughout the UK. Over the years we’ve been fortunate enough to supply the college itself, Imperial College in London, the Army Rugby Union and Gordonstoun School in Scotland plus many more clients throughout the UK. PSM Sportswear provide top quality customised Sports, Leisure, Corporate, Work, School and Tour wear products at competitive prices within a reasonable timeframe catering for your individual requirements.

Do you keep in touch with other people from College?
We’ve encountered a lot of the Cyncoed boys around in our work. If you think of it, most of the lads went off into sports teaching or coaching, and their teams need kit! Often you know where they are, but sometimes it’s a real surprise – I walked into Bournemouth University to talk about supplying kit, and the guy I was meeting was Mark Tucker, also a Cyncoed lad! Just goes to show, when you’ve had the right start, you can definitely get places!

What are the advantages of working with a classmate from college?
Well, we both know where we’re coming from, essentially. You don’t go through college with the likes of Syd Aaron, Eric Thomas and Leighton Davies breathing down your neck without knowing how to keep your nose clean, if you know what I mean!

Are there any disadvantages?
I wouldn’t like to say, but I bet Mike could mention a thing or two!
