Martin Packer (BA (Hons) Hospitality Management with Events 2009) is the Front of House Co-ordinator at the Motorpoint Arema in Cardiff (formerly the Cardiff International Arena).
We asked him a few questions about his time here at UWIC...
What made you choose UWIC?
UWIC has a good reputation for its long established Hospitality courses, and was offering a new course in Events. Being close to Devon (where I was originally from!) it was a good choice. Also Cardiff was appealing as it was a small / medium city and had all the benefits of a large city on offer, plus still near the coast! Along with studying the course there was a great reputation of Cardiff being a major Event city and hosts some great Hospitality venues.
Which of your lecturers do you remember fondly?
Andy Roberts – Carolyn Richie – Lisa Wright – Elspeth Dale – All the tutors where great and if you needed any assistance or had questions they were always approachable and would help where they could. I have kept in contact with several of the tutors since leaving UWIC and it is great to stay in contact with them.
Do you have any family members who also came to UWIC?
No other member of my family ever attended Uni! I was the first and feel that it differently has improved my knowledge on the industry and benefited me in the present time and I can see my qualification helping me in the future to come.
What has been your career path since graduating?
I carried on working for Live Nation (Music) at Cardiff International Arena (now Motorpoint Arena Cardiff) where I started as a Casual Bar member of staff when I came in September 2006. I then progressed to Hospitality coordinator while still at UWIC in 2008, which I carried on with a couple of additional casual Hospitality jobs when leaving UWIC in 2009. I have now progressed to the Front of House and Hospitality coordinator in June 2011 which I now love and enjoy greatly.
Do you have any advice for this year’s graduates?
Anybody thinking of coming to UWIC will enjoy the social aspect of the University campus. I recently visited the new Management building at Llandaff campus, and can say that it is a fantastic site and students will benefit from all the high tech learning systems all within a fantastic setting. Also a must for any student is to push themselves to find a placement / volunteer / or get a casual / part time job in the areas that they want to end up going into. It gives you the help you need with your degree and can be great for assignments, while you never know where it could lead you...
Are you in touch with any other UWIC alumni?
I am still in touch with several students from year, it is great to know other graduates in other areas of work and we can swap ideas and exchange knowledge on the industries as we see them!
